Since I have been so busy the last couple of weeks prepping for the move, it should't surprise me that I got the flu as well--isn't that always the way it works? So I haven't eaten much the last few days,I did drag myself out of bed last weekend to make "bone broth." It was about all I could keep down for a couple of days there. That and, oh toaster waffles which we won't get into...
I did have some time to catch up on my reading a bit, and so I want to share some recipes with you. The first one is Lacto-Fermented Mayonnaise courtesy of Cheeseslave. I make my own mayo anyway, but it only lasts a few days--this recipe uses probiotics as a preservative. I read Tara's post about her experiences with probiotics and bone broth (among other things) curing her ailments, and have been very motivated to add this element to my diet. It seems like the only probiotic you hear of regularly is yogurt, which is not generally a part of my diet--but there are loads of other pro-biotic things you can make/eat as well that may greatly add to your health. I went to PCC and shelled out some serious cash for two jars of lacto-fermented veggies ($8 for one, $6 for the other) and some good quality bones for broth ($2/lb).
Sine M is out of town for a few days, it is just me and the pocketbook (as my grandmother used to say) I have to admit, I haven't been sticking to budget--but as of today--I am and will be.
I am going to try a "cleanse" for a couple of days. I don't really like the term "cleanse" because it sounds sort of hippy-new-agey-vegan and I don't really see myself as the new-age hippy-type, I am more of a food traditionalist with a lot of paleo-enthusiasm. However, I do like the term "cleanse" better than "bowel flora protocol" (for the re-population and management of your own personal variety of bowel flora.)
A "cleanse" generally includes fasting and eating specific nutrients--like fresh vegetables, broths, and fermented foods. Most traditional cultures includes these things. Fermented foods are part of many hunter-gatherer societies, and traditional "healthy" foods often include teas and broths, and various types of fermented foods.
Tomorrow I am going to fast all day and Tuesday and Wednesday I will be consuming only fresh veggies (cooked in a little pastured butter), fermented veggies, avocado, various teas, grapefruit and bone broth (from pastured lamb bones). I imagine by Thursday I will be ready for a more substantial meal, but it shouldn't be so bad. I IF a lot of the time anyway...
Anyway, before I go here is another recipe I want to share this is from the Soaring Crane Clinic.
