Today is day three of my experiment fasting this week. M fasts pretty often with no ill effects, and I have fasted off and on over the years as well--in fact I used it as a strategy with my fibroids a few months ago, with excellent results. Previously I only fasted from about 8pm until about 2pm, but this week I am fasting for 20-21 hours each day.
I am fasting, not to lose weight, because it really doesn't help me in that department, but rather to gain control of my appetite, and as a bonus, to spend less on food. While working out my budget, I realized I could devise a perfect grass fed meat, and organic vegetable diet that would be completely affordable if I only ate once a day. It also would enable me to control my calories in a way that seems much less onerous then adding them up over the course of a day. I allow myself a window of 3-4 hours and enjoy my food!
I allow myself to eat as much as I want at that one meal. Knowing that seems to keep my appetite under control the rest of the day, plus, I get more sleep since I don't have to get up early to make breakfast or lunch for the day.
So far, I have managed to eat my daily calories in two "meals" between 4:30pm and 8:30pm. I am trying to come up with a perfectly balanced "meal" that is perfectly primal, and still under 1800 calories. Last night I managed to create the perfect combination of fat protein and carbohydrate, and chock full of vitamins and minerals as well! I do take a few supplements on top of the meal to ensure that I am getting all the nutrients I need, but my goal is to eat a balanced whole foods diet, so I want to use as few vitamin supplements as possible. Right now, I am taking probiotics, fish oil, and magnesium once per day.
Things I have noticed about fasting thus far:
I was more tired the first two days than normal--today, on day three I feel great!
I am not ravenous.
I am thirstier than normal.
I have a very strong sensse of physical well-being.
Sounds good! I am glad it's going well. One thing I like about fasting is that when you do eat, you really enjoy and appreciate the food, much more than usual, and really savour it. You don't take it for granted.
ReplyDeleteI like intermittent fasting.
ReplyDeleteIt's a skill that for me, is learned.
