I have been trying to cook with more spices lately--ginger, turmeric, chili, cinnamon. While doing some research for an article I would like to write about traditional spicy foods and the health benefits associated with them, I ran across this video.
Even though it was created and produced by a company that sells "vitaspice" a supplement derived from a combination of spices, I think it is worth watching, and from the paleo/primal perspective, eye-opening.
I seem to have acquired this idea somewhere that Paleo foods...roots, berries, wild meat, can be kind of bland in a strict Paleo diet (hence my quest to constantly seek out new and yummy recipes). Most grocery store veggies (even the organic ones) if steamed and served with no salt, are in fact pretty bland...I remedy this by using lots of spices when cooking.
However, it appears that the flavors of a hunter gatherer diet are not bland at all, and are in fact much spicier that I would have imagined. Food for thought anyway...
What are some of your favorite spicy recipes?
I sprinkle a little cinnamon on my coffee in the morning. I have it in a shaker by the stove. I also have chili flakes in an identical shaker. Sometimes I get a surprise in my coffee.
ReplyDeleteMy fave spice these days is cumin. I love the taste and aroma. You can use it whole or ground, toasted or raw, and it blends with lots of other spices, like coriander.
Yes! I love cumin too. I have been making a lot of taco filling (for salads, not tacos) lately since grassfed ground beef is relatively inexpensive. I make my own taco seasoning with equal parts cumin, chili, paprika, and garlic. It rocks!
ReplyDeleteI've never tried cumin with coriander---it seems like that would be good on kebabs or chicken sate. YUM!
I have been toying with a recipe for Aloo Gobi that is made with cauliflower and some sort of potato substitute. So far I have tried parsnip and radish without much success. I'm going to try celery root next. Anyway, my recipe for it uses cumin seeds liberally--I have seen other recipes for it that also include coriander. I'll have to experiment, I haven't quite got the taste right...
