Paleo Budget Challenge - $5.00 a day

So, I've been struggling to keep my expenses down and have decided that in order to make it financially, I need to limit myself to about $150 a month for food. This is very difficult sometimes. I want to eat Omega-3 eggs, fish three times a week, and grass fed beef or free range chicken or some other "healthy" paleo protein. The challenge is, can I do this on $5 a day--or do I have to give up "perfect paleo" for "adequate paleo"? It is a good question. I would love to be able to eat paleoleet all the time, but I suspect that it will cost me quite a bit more than $5 a day--but I haven't really tested it with all of my budgeting skills. (And I do have some budgeting skills). So, starting Monday, I am going to budget $35 for the week and see what happens. I may have to IF to make this work--eating once a day several times a week is financially helpful...but I want to see what happens, and what I end up being able to afford.

Does anyone have any budget tips I may not have thought of?

  1. I am in the same boat. Should I eat a good enough or really good Paleo diet...I think, for me, maybe a good enough is all I can do right now. Being Paleo, seems to be expensive. The meats, fresh veggies and fruit is more expensive than a bag of rice, or oatmeal. I am interested in how you do in your budget. I have thought many times about buying meat in bulk, and portioning it. I don't have a freezer though. And, I am a bit "Monklike" and would worry about a power shortage, and ruining my meat!

  2. Organs, Cheap fatty cuts of meat etc. I have nuts for breakfast and just a handful. But I am going to be very interested to see how your budget goes on this!

  3. I'm looking forward in seeing how you do! We're a family of 6, so we spend quite a bit on food. I've just started eating Primal but have been eating organic/free range, etc.. for a while and it is more expensive but worth it when you can. But I don't think Primal has to be "all or nothing", do what you can with what you have!

  4. Canned or foil pack wild salmon is one heck of a lot cheaper than fresh salmon. Yes, it's different, but you'd be able to keep fish in your diet pretty often.

If you like apples, buy the ones in the 3 or 4# bag. They are smaller and a much better value also.

Berries cost the earth, as I'm sure you know, but if you can find a way to use frozen berries, you can save a lot.
