Paleoleet

I coined a new word yesterday:

Paleoleet [pey-lee-oh-leet] or, especially Brit., [pal-ee-uh-leet]

A group of people that follow the most select version of Paleolithic or evolutionary nutrition. Usually limiting themselves to strictly 100% wild or grass-fed, pastured meat and organic vegetables and fruits.

I have to link to two very good posts in the Paleosphere:

If you haven't already checked out Dr. Dan's Blog, "At Darwin's Table," you should. He is an excellent and thoughtful writer. He recently talked about Grass-fed versus grain-fed meat and made some excellent points. I think the discussion afterwards was very insightful. Here is my part of the conversation, during which I coined the new word...

"Excellent post Dan!
This is indeed a contentious subject. Another thing that is difficult for many of us, regarding grass-fed versus grain-fed meat is the cost of grass-fed meat. People are constantly pointing out on Paleo sites that the “cost” of not eating grass-fed meat is the risk to your health. Unfortunately, many of the people who make these statements do not seem to think that $5.99 a pound for grass fed meat is a bad price.
They encourage cowpooling, and shopping at farmer’s markets, which is not feasible for the majority of the population (in the US at least).
When your choices are limited to .99/pound grain-fed ground beef, and grilled veggies or pasta with sauce, I think that the meat choice, whether it is grain-fed or not is obviously the better choice! This is why I like Cordain’s book. He did his best to translate the paleo diet to a diet anyone could follow.
There is a whole paleo-primal spectrum out there, on one end is the grass-fed, organic paleoleet, and on the other are the people who do the best they can with what they have. We are all part of the same movement, and should be supporting each other instead of feeling like a failure every time we have to eat non-pastured chicken or grain fed beef…"

(Today's post was also thought provoking and interesting. A guest post by another primal blogger, JP from Primal Journal)

Another post that I want to share is from Melissa at HuntGatherLove. Melissa wrote about "Paleo-fascism" and she's completely right--once you start getting caught up in the "rules" you lose sight of the bigger picture. Good read.

I guess those are my toasts for the week...

Cheers!

  2. Thanks for the link!!! I have already linked you in my list!! I agree too that there were some interesting comments. But I think one person in particular grossly missed the points I was making, or was a part of that paleoleet you mention.
