I'll have a quarter-pounder please, with large fries and some Statins on the side...

I really wanted a hamburger yesterday. Not a grass-fed home-made hamburger with no bun, but the real deal, straight from the maw of hell that is otherwise known as a drive-through...I resisted, mostly because I had read several articles referencing this study yesterday that pretty much took away my appetite. Mostly because some media outlets were supportive of the idea that we should just let people eat junk food, but sell them drugs to combat the effects. Statins are not the answer. Changing society and how we look at food is the answer.

I encourage you to read Stephan Guyenet's post on the original study.

And for a more thorough background in why Statins are NOT a good idea, read Dr. Eades' posts on the topic here, here and here. I think this one is the most revealing though, with interesting quotes throughout, and the last couple of paragraphs hit home for me. I like the way Dr. Eades writes about his topic. He makes it interesting and accessible, and he encourages people to do their own research.

I'll repeat what I said before, Statins are not the answer. Something much more comprehensive and difficult is needed. Change.

  1. I agree that change is the answer, but there are so many obstacles in the way! I read Stephan's post and he hits the nail on the head when he says "one of the main challenges we face is that our current system is immensely lucrative for powerful financial interests." It's all about the money.

  2. I know! The things that need to change are frighteningly large-scale. Moving away from factory farming, and over-reliance on pharmaceuticals to cure everything would be huge steps, but Stephan is right--our current system is far too closely entwined with big business. Until that changes, we can only take baby steps.
