So today was the farmer's market in Redmond, and I went to replenish my vegetables.
I still have two eggplants from last week, and two small zucchini that I am having for dinner tonight with my leftover mushrooms. I also have three golden beets and some beet greens that I need to use up soon. I've never had golden beets before, but I am thinking of making Karney's Paleo Stuff and trying it with a mixture of sweet potato and golden beets this time to see what it is like.
This time I got three nice medium sized zucchini for $2.00. A bundle of fresh basil for $2.00 (Can't grow my own here, it keeps dying) Three large tomatoes for $1.23, six pastured, organic (enormous) duck eggs for $4, some chinese spinach for $2.00,(I must post a picture of that, it is really pretty!) and a 1/2 pint of raspberries for $3.00 (picked last night). Last week someone was selling their zucchini for .80 a pound, but this week prices were higher. Maybe I should have gone later in the day, but I wanted to see if the Golden Glen Creamery stand had half and half--which they didn't because they weren't there this week...
After that I went to Top foods and picked up a bottle of half and half from the Twin Brook Creamery in Lynden, Washington for $2.99. (Their cows are grass-fed, and their farm has been in their family since 1910.) I also bought some plums and nectarines for $5.17, and a bottle of red wine for $10.99. For a total of $33.38. I am going to get some avocados and mushrooms from Costco as well this week which brings my total up to $43.86. I purchased three pounds of grass fed beef at Whole foods yesterday for $3.99 each, but I still have quite a lot of meat in my freezer from last week (at least three porkchops and two steaks).
I have some more expensive stuff in there as well that I need to eat, but I am trying to even it out a bit so that the days I eat things like Salmon, I fast most of the day and eat it with less expensive things like beet greens and plums. So far I seem to be doing OK with my daily expenditures. I need to be careful not to buy too much produce--because I need to use it up within a week or so.
Here is my menu for today:
Breakfast:
10am Coffee with organic half and half .52 (new less expensive coffee)
1/4 Pork chop .24
1 1/2 cup strawberries .74
Lunch:
Cobb Salad free (Thanks to my sweet cousin for taking me out to lunch!)
Dinner:
Zucchini and mushrooms sautéed in butter .70
3/4 pork chop .70
1/2 sweet potato with butter and 1 ounce grass-fed chevre $1.06
Wine $1.24
Total: $5.20
