Meals, Days 20-24

Saturday M and I walked from the Cully neighborhood in northeast Portland to the trendy and hip Alberta Arts area for breakfast. We walked by several excellent-looking restaurants in Alberta that serve vegan food, sandwich-style breakfasts or loaded waffles, etc. But then we stumbled on La Petite Provence - Boulangerie & Patisserie. I resisted the pastries which was an amazing feat in and of itself, and settled for Steak au jus & Eggs. The steak was about 5 ounces of top sirloin served with an herb-mushroom sauce. It was accompanied by two eggs over easy and served with Provençal Potatoes & Butternut Squash. I gave M the potatoes and ate the squash for my starchy carb. I also had a wonderful Americano with cream.

After breakfast we wandered around the Alberta Arts area looking for the Cultured Caveman Food Cart and found it tucked in the food pod on 15th and Alberta--I said hello to Joe and promised I'd be back later to get something.

We decided to go downtown, and feeling like more of a walk, we headed for Lloyd Center and caught a movie, then grabbed the Max to Powell's and hung out downtown the rest of the day. Around 7pm we headed home (in the rain) and stopped on the way for some dinner at the Radio Room. I had "Steak of the Cascades" which was a nice chunk of broiled flank steak with vegetables. I skipped the potatoes and asked for extra veggies, and had a glass of wine.

The next day, Sunday, my feet were tired (we walked around 8 miles!), so we took M's truck and checked out southeast Portland. We had breakfast at Banning's Restaurant and Pie House. We both had Sirloin Steak & Shrimp, which was a 10 oz Top Sirloin, charbroiled and served with a shrimp skewer, cottage cheese and fresh sliced tomatoes. I also had coffee with cream. We hung out together and spent the rest of the afternoon just relaxing together watching Trollhunter! For dinner we trekked out to Clackamas Town Center and had salads at California Pizza Kitchen.

On Monday I was on my own and walked back down to Alberta Arts and had an omelette at La Petite Provence, with fruit and butternut squash. Then, I walked over to the Cultured Caveman Cart and bought a bunch of Paleo snacks. On my way home, I wandered around a bit north of Alberta to explore the neighborhood and to see the cute bungalow-lined streets. When M got home from work we went to Tuk Tuk Thai for dinner and had roast duck and chicken with curry sauce. I ate all the veggies and M had the rice...

Tuesday morning I was on my own again so I wandered over to Kennedy School for a breakfast scramble, and then explored the neighborhoods north of Killingsworth for more cute bungalows. I walked quite a bit while I was in Portland, around 5 miles most days. When I got back I rested and packed up my stuff for the trip home on Wednesday. When M got back, we explored Fremont a little and found Laurelwood Public House on Sandy and decided on salads for dinner. Then, we nipped next door to Der Reinlander for dessert. M had Afel Strudel, I had Bavarian Custard with raspberry sauce. Then we retired to the house for an early night.

The next morning was the Fourth of July, and since M was free, he drove me back downtown, and we found a breakfast spot near the train station. At Isabel Pearl I had the Rosemary Potato Breakfast--which was scrambled eggs with country potatoes and rosemary toast. I skipped the toast and asked for sausage, and only ate about half the potatoes. Then after a nice walk along the river, M saw me off on the train home. When I got home, I made dinner with some chicken fingers I had in the freezer and tried out a new recipe, Paleo Butter Chicken served over broccoli. I collapsed into bed at about 8:30. I think in general I did pretty well in Portland, with all the walking, the added carbs from the potatoes (and the one dessert) was OK. I love Portland and while it's good to be home, I miss M...
