So I made it in under budget a bit. Of course I did get a lot of free meals this week, but I honestly think I could make a pretty good vegetable and chicken stew for about $5 that would be good for three meals. I think I may try to do that next week to keep my costs down.
I'm not sure how realistic my plans are for most people. I have been fasting most of the day several days a week, and eating at my cousin's a lot. Starting next week, I will try to be more conscientious of what I am making. With other primal/paleo followers in mind.
Two things I have learned so far: It is nice to have family that will feed you, and it is comforting to have meat in the freezer. I pretty much have lived off of two packages of meat I got on sale at Safeway. Three servings of steak (8oz each) for $8.14, and a huge thing of pork chops for $8.63 (9 pork chops about 8-10oz each). So far none of these have been pastured or grass-fed. I did buy 3 pounds of grass-fed ground beef at Whole foods on Friday, which will last me for a bit--but I probably won't start eating that until this weekend.
I will continue to keep track of how much money I consume in food each day.
So far today:
Coffee with half and half .52
Apple .32 (QFC, organic)
Walnuts (2 oz.) .52 (Costco, 3 lb. bag, 11.99)
On another related note, I am taking up the Primal Blueprint Challenge over at Mark's Daily Apple. I already follow a plan greatly influenced by what Mark writes about. No reason not to join the group of other primal/paleo followers and enjoy a little solidarity...
Update:
The rest of my food for the day was free. Wednesdays I go over to my cousin's for dinner. We had fairly primal stuff--meatloaf, brussels sprouts, and a potato gratin, followed by a little ice cream for dessert. And some yummy wine.
Congrats on coming in under budget! Agree that it's nice to have family who will feed you, (especially when they can cook!) and it's a good feeling to have meat in the freezer. I have joined in Mark's challenge too for much the same reasons as you - I already am Primal most of the time but it's good to have a little solidarity.
